#5. Restoration of Mediterranean rivers and flood management

Hosted by Jaime Fraile and Eduardo Lafuente, Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura (CHS)

We will spend the day taking a short trip to visit some of the recent restoration projects implemented in the Segura River Basin, and to learn how they help us reduce flood Hazard. First, we will visit the restoration Works currently in progress in the Molina de Segura river stretch. They intend to restore native riparian vegetation and to fight Giant Reed invasion. We will be able to learn about the latest Reed fighting techniques and plantation management innovations of this Project, funded by the General Directorate for Water with the PIMA Adapta Climate Change adaptation funds, and implemented by public enterprise TRAGSA.

We will then return to the bus to start our way towards Calasparra, where we will visit riparian vegetation restoration sites (LIFE+RIPISILVANATURA) and fish passages (LIFE+SEGURA RIVERLINK).

After approximately one hour drive from Molina, we will reach the Olivarejo area, not far from the Virgen de la Esperanza Sanctuary. At this site we will be able to visit project sites for both the aforementioned projects.

After that, we will go back to the bus to the Sanctuary for lunch. And after lunch we will visit other restoration sites of habitat 92 A0: The Mediteranean Riparian Forest.
